Have you ever been midway through making dinner only to discover you’re missing a key ingredient, like barbecue sauce? It’s happened to me more times than I’d like to admit. At first, I’m usually frustrated with myself for not checking beforehand. More often than not, though, those little kitchen mishaps lead to something unexpectedly delicious.
This Sweet and Tangy Barbecue Sauce is a perfect example.
I started making this homemade barbecue sauce years ago when I needed some for dinner and discovered I didn’t have any. Rather than make a trip to the grocery store, I decided to make my own with ingredients I already had on hand.
I’ve tweaked the recipe a bit over the years. It still has that wonderful combination of sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors that made it a keeper in the first place.
Honey and brown sugar provide the sweetness, while apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice add just the right amount of tang. A little liquid smoke and smoked paprika give the sauce that unmistakable barbecue flavor, even when you’re not cooking outdoors.
It’s become my go-to sauce for everything from grilled chicken and ribs to pulled pork and baked beans. I use it exclusively in my Smoky Southern Baked Beans with Bacon, Slow Cooked Barbecue Pulled Pork, and Pork Belly Burnt Ends. It’s also delicious brushed onto grilled meats, spooned over burgers, or even drizzled on barbecue pizza. And it’s the perfect condiment for Dry Rubbed Country Style Barbecue Ribs.
What started as a last-minute kitchen improvisation has become one of those recipes I wouldn’t want to be without. And the best part? It’s easy to make with everyday ingredients.

Recipe Tips
Adjust the sweetness and tanginess. This recipe is intentionally sweet and tangy, with plenty of honey and brown sugar balanced by vinegar and lemon juice. If you prefer a sharper sauce, add a little extra apple cider vinegar. For a less sweet version, reduce the honey or brown sugar when preparing your next batch.
Use liquid smoke sparingly when making adjustments. Liquid smoke is concentrated, and a little goes a long way. While I use hickory liquid smoke for its rich barbecue flavor, you can experiment with other varieties. If you’re adjusting the quantity, add a little at a time.
Turn up the heat. The cayenne pepper adds only a mild hint of spice. If you enjoy a spicier sauce, gradually increase the cayenne or add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce.
Stir frequently while simmering. The honey and brown sugar can settle toward the bottom of the saucepan as the sauce heats. Stirring helps the ingredients combine evenly and prevents scorching.
Let the sauce cool before storing. Transfer any unused sauce to clean, airtight food-storage containers and refrigerate promptly. I prefer glass jars because they’re easy to store and clean.
Make extra for another meal. This recipe makes a generous batch, so you may have sauce left over. Freeze smaller portions for convenient use in future recipes.
